APC declares Oborevwori Delta party leader

The All Progressives Congress in Delta State has declared Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as its new leader, following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC on Monday.

In a statement on Wednesday, the state APC Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, said Oborevwori’s emergence as leader aligns with the party’s tradition where a sitting governor becomes the party leader in their state.

“We wish to categorically state that with his entry into the APC, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori assumes the position of the leader of the Party in Delta State. This position is not subject to debate or contention,” the statement read.

The party pointed to Vice President Kashim Shettima’s remarks at the defection ceremony as affirmation of the governor’s new status, describing it as “authoritative, binding and final.”

The statement further cautioned against any internal opposition, warning that the party will not condone actions aimed at undermining the governor’s position.

“Delta APC finds it strange, arrogant and reprehensible for any individual to continue to arrogate or to parade himself as the leader of the Party in Delta State in clear opposition to the present reality.

“Anyone who seeks to undermine this position… will face severe sanctions from the party,” the statement added.

The APC called on all members and stakeholders to support Oborevwori and unite under his leadership, reiterating their commitment to the delivery of democratic dividends under his M.O.R.E. agenda.

“Delta APC is solidly behind His Excellency as our leader, and we recognise no other individual in that role,” the party concluded.

The development marks a significant shift in Delta State’s political alignment, as the APC prepares to consolidate its structure under new leadership.
