Afrobeats sensation David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has criticized the quality of leadership in Nigeria, describing the country as having some of the “worst governments.”
In a recent chat with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden, Davido expressed his disappointment over Nigeria’s leadership but commended the entertainment industry for reshaping the country’s international image in a positive light.
“I am happy that entertainment switched the narrative. We [Nigerians], don’t have the best leaders. We have the worst governments.
“But the music and entertainment industry in general, has impacted our country’s image abroad positively.”
“The entertainment industry is also attracting tourists to the country. Last December, there were more Americans than Nigerians in Lagos. I was like, what are you all doing here?
“Back in the days, we used to be excited when coming to America but now, they are the ones coming to Lagos. It is not just music, it is the culture as a whole. If you go to Paris Fashion Week, about 80 per cent of the models are Africans, the same with the creative directors. It’s impressive.”
In other news, Afrobeats artist, Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma, known as Qing Madi, has shared her thoughts on the Nigerian music industry, describing it as “so dark.”
The 18-year-old singer expressed this sentiment through her Instagram story, stating simply, “The industry is so dark.”
This opinion aligns with recent claims from other artists such as Reekado Banks, who suggested that a “demonic” music executive is sabotaging up-and-coming talents in the Nigerian music scene.
In 2023, Qing Madi also opened up about how she lost a significant number of followers after sharing posts about her Christian faith on social media. Despite the loss, she emphasized that she had no regrets about preaching about Jesus Christ.
The concerns raised by Madi are not new. In the past, Kizz Daniel has similarly criticized the Nigerian music industry, calling it a “cartel” controlled by a powerful “cabal.”
