Nigerian singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, widely known as Spyro, has stirred conversations with his recent remarks about gospel artists and the music industry.
In a candid interview on Trending, a Hip TV show hosted by Pascal, the “Who’s Your Guy” crooner claimed that many gospel musicians are more focused on financial gains than spiritual impact. He argued that there is little to no distinction between gospel and secular artists in terms of motivation.
He said, “The people that claim to be gospel artists or gospel ministers are just artists -they are in the business to make money just like us in the Afrobeats industry.”
He also addressed the intense pressure faced by female artists, particularly when it comes to maintaining a public image. Using Grammy-winning singer Tems as an example, Spyro praised her for remaining authentic and modest in an industry that often rewards the opposite.
“There is a lot of pressure on female artists to do crazy things. Tems is holding it down decently yet she is one of the biggest [female artists] in the world right now. She is decent. She has it together.
“Sometimes, I’m just like, how is she able to do this? We should put Tems out there for our young ladies to be looking up to as a role model,” he said.
Spyro, who often refers to himself as “Jesus boy,” is known for merging faith and music, but his latest comments are sure to spark mixed reactions among fans and industry insiders alike.
