The Lord Mayor of Leeds, United Kingdom, Abigail Marshall Katung—wife of Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, who represents Kaduna South Senatorial District—has been conferred with the prestigious traditional title of Gimbiyan Jaba (Princess of Ham) in Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The colorful coronation ceremony was held at the Kpop Ham Palace in Kwoi, the headquarters of Jaba LGA. It attracted dignitaries from across Nigeria and the diaspora, including top military officers, government officials, academics, and community leaders.
Other distinguished personalities also received traditional titles at the event, including: Dr. Gideon Jock – Hasken Jaba (Light of Jaba), Barr. Dr. Deborah Usman – Jakadiyan Jaba (Ambassador of Jaba) and Engr. Dr. Dogara Gyet – Jagaban Jaba (Forerunner of Jaba).
In her acceptance speech, Lord Mayor Abigail Katung expressed deep gratitude for the honor, describing it as a reaffirmation of her cultural roots and an acknowledgment of her contributions, despite living abroad for over 25 years.
“To still be remembered in your homeland after so many years away is a thing of joy. This recognition is deeply meaningful, especially coming from my people,” she said.
Highlighting the importance of culture, she added: “Culture is at the heart of everything we do. It shapes who we are. I hope to inspire young girls to believe in themselves and work hard to achieve their dreams.”
She credited her success to the unwavering support of her husband, Senator Katung, and emphasized the need for gender inclusion in society.
“I call on those in positions of power to create more inclusive environments for women. Women make up half of the world’s population—and the other half was birthed by them.”
Senator Sunday Marshall Katung congratulated his wife and fellow honourees, expressing appreciation to His Royal Majesty, the Kpop Ham, Dr. Danladi Gyet Maude, OON, for bestowing the honors.
“On behalf of the wonderful people of Kaduna South Senatorial District, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to my dear wife and all the other honourees. This recognition is a testament to your unwavering commitment, integrity, and service to our people. The Ham Nation is truly blessed to have leaders like you,” he said.
