Hundreds of women in Port Harcourt took to the streets on Monday in a solidarity march to show support for the state of emergency declared in Rivers State.
Dressed in white and carrying placards with messages such as “Prosecute the Bombers of Rivers Assembly” and “State of Emergency is Constitutional”, the women voiced their backing for the Federal Government’s intervention and the appointment of Ibok-Ete Ibas as the sole administrator of the state.
Chanting solidarity songs and slogans, the women moved through major routes in the state capital, reinforcing their support for President Bola Tinubu’s recent actions.
Their rally follows an earlier protest on April 11 by a separate group of women who opposed the state of emergency. That group had called on former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Muhammadu Buhari, and Goodluck Jonathan to intervene and help restore democratic governance in Rivers.
President Tinubu declared a state of emergency on March 18 in response to an ongoing political crisis in the oil-rich state.
As part of the declaration, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly were suspended for an initial period of six months. Ibas, a retired naval officer, was appointed to administer the state during the emergency period.
