The National Association of Ondo State Students (NAOSS) has strongly opposed attempts by certain state government appointees to interfere in its affairs or politically hijack the organization.
In a joint statement, NAOSS President Hammed Oyelade, Vice President Ogunga Benjamin, General Secretary Takiti Olayemi, and 20 other executive members condemned what they described as troubling actions by government officials aimed at undermining the association’s independence.
“Over the past few days, we have observed some troubling events involving certain appointees of the state government, whose actions suggest an attempt to meddle in the affairs of our independent student body,” the leaders said.
“Let it be known and clearly understood: the leadership of NAOSS under my watch remains peaceful, focused, and unshakably committed to the security, welfare, and interests of every Ondo State student, both at home and abroad.”
Reaffirming their dedication to the democratic principles that guide the association, the leadership emphasized that they will not allow NAOSS to be used as a political tool by any external forces, regardless of status or influence.
“We are not against the government of Ondo State,” the statement read. “In fact, we have always supported and appreciated any policy, program, or initiative that promotes students’ growth and development. However, we reject in strong terms any attempt to take over or politically hijack the affairs of our association under any guise.”
The association questioned the rationale behind such interference, asking, “Why would any government official or appointee seek to override the democratic structure of NAOSS, an association founded on student solidarity, service, and the spirit of progress?”
The leadership further disclosed that steps are being taken to address the issue through legal and peaceful means. “We remain open to dialogue, but we will not tolerate disrespect, intimidation, or manipulation. The interest of NAOSS and its members will always come first.”
They also called on stakeholders, including past leaders of the association, traditional rulers, and the Ondo State Government led by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, to intervene and ensure the integrity of student structures is preserved.
“To every Ondo State student out there — stay calm, stay informed, and stay united,” the statement concluded. “Your leadership is working and will continue to represent you with integrity and courage.”
