The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has announced a renewed strategy to enhance voluntary tax compliance among the public.
Speaking at the West Africa Tax Administrators Forum (WATAF) Country Correspondents Conference and Training for Heads of Corporate Communications in Abuja, Dr. Adedeji emphasized the critical role of effective communication in tax administration.
“The role of effective communication in tax administration cannot be overstated. As Country Correspondents and Heads of Corporate Communications, you are the frontline ambassadors of our tax institutions, responsible for shaping narratives, clarifying policies, and fostering voluntary compliance,” he stated.
He highlighted that the ongoing tax reform bills before the National Assembly are expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s tax revenue.
Dr. Adedeji also noted that the WATAF Council would deliberate on institutional sustainability, review progress reports, and oversee the operations of the WATAF Secretariat.
According to him, Nigeria has consistently championed international tax cooperation and played a vital role in the development of WATAF by providing technical assistance and capacity-building programs to member countries.
“Our country has also been at the forefront of promoting regional cooperation in tax administration, recognizing the importance of collaboration in addressing common challenges,” he said.
He reiterated FIRS’s commitment to supporting tax policy development and capacity-building initiatives across West Africa, stressing the importance of domestic resource mobilization for economic growth.
Dr. Adedeji urged participants to actively engage in discussions, strengthen professional networks, and apply the knowledge gained to enhance tax systems.
He also commended WATAF for fostering collaboration and capacity-building among tax administrations in the region.
