The Lagos State House of Assembly has criticized the unauthorized entry of suspended Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, into the Assembly premises, labeling his actions a security breach and a violation of legislative protocol.
According to reports, the Assembly’s Chief Security Officer, Kabir Kushoro, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos.
Onafeko was suspended on January 13, 2025, by a two-thirds majority of the House over alleged financial misconduct. However, the National Industrial Court in Lagos overturned his suspension last Thursday and ordered his reinstatement as Clerk of the House.
The court’s ruling also nullified the appointment of Acting Clerk, Babatunde Ottun, who was appointed by Speaker Mojisola Meranda following Onafeko’s suspension.
In case NICN/LA/23/2025, Onafeko had sought an interim injunction to prevent the Lagos Assembly from appointing a replacement until the court could rule on his interlocutory injunction request.
Justice M. N. Esowe, who presided over the case, granted the application and issued an ex parte order barring Babatunde from acting as Clerk.
“The parties shall maintain peace and status quo ante bellum until the motion on notice is heard and determined,” the judge ruled.
Despite the court ruling, Kushoro alleged that Onafeko arrived at the Assembly complex on Wednesday morning with unidentified men and blocked the staff entrance with his vehicle.
“This act of defiance constitutes a clear disregard for legislative protocols and security regulations,” Kushoro stated.
“The House leadership views this action as an affront to the institution’s integrity and will take all necessary steps to uphold discipline and order.
“Onafeko has a pending suit against the Assembly, the Acting Clerk, and the State Government. He should focus on the legal process instead of disrupting Assembly activities,” he added.
He further claimed that Onafeko attempted to force his way into the Clerk’s office. Kushoro assured that security agencies have been alerted, and necessary steps are being taken to prevent further breaches.
