An unusual domestic saga has unfolded in Abia State, where an 80-year-old man allegedly served his wife divorce papers, sparking outrage and disbelief within the local community.
The incident was brought to public attention by Ochiegbu Marvelous, a human rights advocate on Facebook, who intervened after the 70-year-old woman was reportedly detained by the police on the orders of her husband.
According to Marvelous, the man accused his wife of attempting to poison him five years ago, and used the allegation to have her taken into custody.
In a post shared on social media, Marvelous narrated the bizarre sequence of events:
“80-year-old man from my village served his wife of 70 years divorce papers last week from the high court in Abia. Their first son is in his 40s.”
He revealed that he and his team were able to secure the woman’s release from the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) in Abia State.
Marvelous further alleged that the man sold off 20 plots of land in an apparent effort to “show his wife pepper.” Matters escalated when their son challenged his father over the situation, only for the father to allegedly include his son’s name in a petition, labelling him a kidnapper.
“I don’t really know the person engineering this, but I’m disappointed.
Accusing someone with no questionable character of being a kidnapper is just too much,” Marvelous wrote.
He praised officers at the State SCIID for their professionalism and swift handling of the case, saying they kept his team well-informed throughout the ordeal.
